Playcon Safety Surfacing
‘Playcon Safety Surfacing’ is a top of the range, dual layer porous system. It has a continuous finish that can be installed to flat, mounded or ramped sub-structures.

‘Playcon Safety Surfacing’ can be installed onto various sub bases, MOT Type 1 being the most common, but existing hard surfaces such as macadam and concrete can be easily utilised. Hard surfacing as a sub-base is recommended on sites where a nominal safety surface depth is required, due to low, or no CFH. The hard surfacing is then ‘Primed’ to ensure adhesion between the two surfaces, creating a stronger end product.

The base is manufactured from recycled SBR rubber crumb which is bonded using a urethane resin. This course varies in depth depending on the Critical Fall Height of the play equipment.

The wearing course is manufactured from EPDM rubber crumb and urethane resin. The EPDM is available in a variety of colours, samples of which can be obtained from Playcon Ltd. This course gives the product play value from the colour schemes and playscapes used in the design, and durability from the strength of EPDM.

‘Playcon Safety Surface’ is tested to BS EN 1177 and is laid in accordance with BS 5696: part 3. It meets all the necessary performance criteria up to a CFH of 3.2m.

Structural Sub-Base Course
The structural sub base should be of sound construction and edged by either pre-cast concrete kerbs (PCC’S) or weather treated timber. When the required depth of ‘Playcon Safety Surface’ is less then 40mm, then either a macadam or a no-fines sub base should be laid to a depth of 50 or 60mm.

The no-fines concrete should be mixed in a 4:1 ration of stone aggregate: cement, using just enough water to coat the aggregate. The concrete is then screeded, laid to a correct line and level, and lightly tamped. Local deviations should e no greater then 10mm under a 3m straight line.

Following compaction, the no-fines should be covered with a polythene sheet for protection from the elements. This should be laid on week prior to the installation of the safety surface.

When macadam is used, a maximum of 20mm aggregate with 20 pen, straight run bitumen is required, complying with BS 4987. After compaction, this should have no local deviations greater than 10mm under a 3m straight edge.

Sub-Base Course
The base course or foundation layer will comprise of MOT Type 1 or similar approved graded aggregated compacted to line and levels to a minimum of 100mm thick and, depending on site conditions, a maximum of 300mm. Local deviations should be no greater then 10mm under a 3m straight edge.

Maintenance
‘Playcon Safety Surfacing’ is generally a maintenance free product. If the porosity of the surface reduces due to a build up of grime, etc, a power hose can be used. A small area should be tested first to assess the require pressure. Specialised clearing materials can be obtained from Playcon Ltd. This is generally only needed if the surface is left for a period of months, under a build up of rubbish such as degrading waste paper and decaying foliage.

N.B. it is recommended that any overhanging tree branches should be cut back as far as possible to allow sunlight on to the surface. This would prevent a coating of sap or any other associated fungal growth occurring.
